The estate is part of the land granted in 1685 to Simon van der Stel, an early Dutch Governor of the Cape, who planted the first vineyards in Constantia. These later produced the legendary Constantia dessert wine, vin de constance sought after by the aristocracy of 18th and 19th century Europe.
