Allan Scott's 2020 Marlborough Black Label Chardonnay showcases the typical mineral notes of the Wairau Valley. This wine is crafted from hand-picked Chardonnay grapes grown in the Marlborough region's Wairau Valley.

The 2020 harvest season was filled with uncertainty. Just as the harvest began, COVID-19 lockdown measures were introduced, and the winemaking team had to adapt to new ways of working. However, once all systems were in place, they put their all into harvesting the grapes. In hindsight, despite the challenges faced, it was a superb harvest year, possibly one of the best Marlborough has seen in the past 20 years. Ample sunshine hours, low pest pressure, moderate yields, and ripe grapes all came together to create some outstanding fruit and, in turn, some excellent wines.

During the winemaking process, the grapes were immediately pressed and quickly settled for 6 hours. The fermenting juice was then transferred to 500-liter French oak puncheons, where it aged for 14 months. Afterwards, the wine was pumped out of the barrels and allowed to settle naturally for some time, allowing the sediment to sink to the bottom. This wine skips the filtration step, but that doesn't mean it remains cloudy. The winemaker lets gravity do its work, racking the clarified wine into a fresh stainless steel tank before bottling.

This luxurious Marlborough Chardonnay exhibits the typical mineral notes of the Wairau Valley. The rounded mouthfeel from its time in oak is complemented by aromas of stone fruit, pear, and almond. When savoring this wine, you don't need to pair it with a seafood chowder or avocado and tuna tapas, as it is flawlessly delicious on its own.
